An easy to digest article on how to chose the correct artificial lawn for your area
We know choosing the right artificial lawn can be quite difficult due to the vast range available online. We have created this article to help make your decision an easier and more confident one!
We believe there are 5 main areas to consider when choosing your artificial lawn.
1. High activity / Pets / Children?
If your area is going to be used for children to play on or just general high foot traffic then we would advise going for a shorter pile height. For example our Finesse 26mm or Summer Lawn 26mm. This is because a shorter pile heigh will not flatten as easy as a longer pile height would. So, if you were to go for Finesse Deluxe which is 35mm and you were walking up and down the area then there may be more noticeable foot prints indents than if you had Finesse 26mm down. Any flattening caused however can easily be revived with a hard sweeping brush if done on a regular basis.
Another benefit of a shorter pile lawn is if you have pets who may be using the lawn as a toilet (number 2's specifically!) then it can be a more 'messy' job cleaning up on a longer pile grass. Please excuse any uncomfortable imagery this may have presented!
All of our artificial grass however is pet friendly, regardless of pile height. Meaning your fury friends can not harm the grass as they are made to withstand high levels of wear & tear.
You may have noticed when searching for artificial grass online that some there is a wide variety of pile heights ranging all the way up to 50mm, sometimes marketed as a more premium option. However, we do not necessarily think that this is the case and in fact do not stock anything longer than 35mm for this reason. We actually began our career as landscapers and hence have had a magnitude of experiencing laying, working and seeing the longevity of different turf products. We have found that once you start creeping towards the 40mm pile height mark that it can become rather difficult to maintain & upkeep, stepping further away from the low maintenance benefits artificial grass brings.
The only benefit a longer grass ( such as the Finesse Deluxe 35mm ) may present if you have children is that it will be slightly more cushioned to play on. However, we also have a stock of shock pads available which can be laid underneath any artificial grass if extra safety is a feature you are looking for.
If your area is not going to be heavily used and is more for aesthetic use then you have free rain over which grass you choose! This mainly comes down to what you like the look & feel of and thus we recommend ordering a free sample pack to help decide.
2. Appearance
All of our artificial lawns come with their own visual aesthetics. Some have a 'freshly mowed' look (such as finesse 26mm & Summer Lawn 26mm) whereas others have a more less uniformed and 'natural growth' look (such as Dublin 30mm). Baring this in mind, you can decide whether you would like your lawn to look neat and pristine or whether you would prefer a lawn that looks more like how natural grass would look if it was left to grow on its own.
Each grass also comes with its own unique shades / tones of green, combined with subtle brown under thatch designed to mimic real grass. This is why it is a good idea to order a sample pack to see how the grass looks in real life so you can be confident you are happy with your choice!

3. Pile Direction
This is where things get a little bit complicated, but don't worry! We are here to explain everything to ensure you are making the right decision with your new lawn.
All artificial grass has a pile direction, this is the direction in which the blades point towards and happens due to production methods. Because of this, the lawn has a best viewing point / angle and therefore should be laid in the correct direction so that your lawn looks as aesthetic as possible in your own garden. This is something all lawns have and is easily worked around!
For example, if your artificial grass is for your back garden, then you should think about where you will most likely be looking at the grass from. In most cases this may from your own home, for example whilst in your kitchen looking out of the window. It could also be from a certain area in your garden you most commonly sit, for example a seating area or patio.
If this is the case, then you would simply lay the artificial grass so that the pile is pointing towards yourself or the desired viewing point. (We have included photos to help explain & visualise this better!)
If your desired viewing point is not so straightforward however there are easy solutions. For example you may have multiple sitting areas in your garden or it may be for front garden use where you would have to decide whether you would like it to look the best from your own house or from other peoples perspectives who may looking at it from the street. If this is the case then we have specially manufactured artificial lawns which have a much less noticeable pile direction. This means once brushed the appearance of your lawn will look more consistent, regardless of viewing angle. Our omni-directional™ range includes Eden 30mm and Summer Lawn 26mm.
However, it is worth noting that even our lawns which are not multi-directional do not look 'unpleasant' from their incorrect viewing angle, they are simply a different tone of green depending on where you look at it from. Again this is why ordering samples is the best way to ensure you are happy with the lawn you chose!
